When Islam is taught as a body of information, rather than as a body of practice and experiences, the result is that many of our children see Islam as meaningless and irrelevant to their personal lives and experience. Many Muslim educators acknowledge that we must build character as well as relate the knowledge of Islam to daily life.
Dar al Islam sponsored Dawud Tauhidi, director of an operating Muslim school (Crescent Academy International in Canton, MI), to develop an Islamic Values Education curriculum for Muslim schools. In September 1996, principals of four other schools met with Tauhidi and Dar al Islam staff to review the background, vision, and implementation strategies of Tauhidi's plan. The outcome was the Tarbiyah project, a practical approach to Islamic Values Education.
The project coordinates national efforts in this field and seeks to provide a more effective paradigm for teaching Islamic values to today's Muslim children, based on the concept of powerful ideas.
As the plan is being tested and put into practice, improvements will be made and more schools will be added. |
