Dar al Islam conducts workshops at the national, regional, and state levels for secondary educators. These workshops are held at the invitation of the sponsoring body, such as the National Council for the Social Studies, the Rocky Mountain Regional Conference for the Social Studies, and the World History Association.
The workshops are conducted by Karima Alavi. Typically, the presentations focus on issues that arise in teaching about Islam and on reliable educational resources for use in the classroom. Karima begins the workshops by asking teachers to list the stereotypes their students have about Islam and Muslims. Then, with the use of powerpoint presentations, handouts, and group discussion, she gives a lecture on Islamic faith and practice. After the lecture, she answers questions about Islam in general, and about teaching this subject at the pre-collegiate level.
