Abiquiu is a one of a kind location with a long and eventful history.   Local places of interest include old pueblos, ruins, a monastery, camping grounds, and access to beautiful local artwork.

Echo Amphitheater

This awesome site is located about 20 miles north of Abiquiu. A ten-minute walk from the parking area leads you to this 'theater' naturally hollowed out of sandstone by ages of erosion.

Monastery of Christ in the Desert

Located in the Chama Canyon wilderness at the end of a 13 mile dirt road off from US 84 near the Ghost Ranch. The monks practice the Benedictine life of prayer, reading, and manual labor.

Poshouinge Ruins

Off US 84 a few miles south of Abiquiu. The ruin trail is 0.5 miles in length with 2 vista areas and interpretive signs. The trail traverses steep, uneven surfaces and overlooks remnants of an old pueblo and the Chama River Valley.

Santa Rosa de Lima

Off US 84 just south of Abiquiu. The ruins are the remnants of the original Spanish settlement. Built in the 1730's; abandoned in 1748 because of Indian raids; resettled in 1750, and again abandoned when the population moved into the Genizaro pueblo (currently Abiquiu).

Abiquiu Lake and Dam

Turnoff is 10 miles north of Abiquiu. Boating, water skiing, camping, fishing, picnicking. Toilets, showers, water faucets, grills, and picnic shelters.
